Commentary
There is minimal textual variation between the original version of the revelation and the 2013 edition. Although the original version demonstrates poor syntax and spelling, later versions correct for this.
There are two main textual variations. The first is the addition of “God” into verse 29 in the version in the Evening and Morning Star. This changes the meaning of the verse from Joseph having the power to translate through the mercy of God, by the power of the Book of Mormon, to Joseph having the power to translate the Book of Mormon through the mercy and power of God. Arguably this change is closer to the original intent of the revelation, unless it is being argued that the Book of Mormon itself has some supernatural power to impart, which might fit with Joseph Smith’s history of treasure digging and other involvement in Magick in the 1820s.
The second main variation is the introduction of “Smith, Jr.” to clarify which Joseph is being referred to. This addition appears in the D&C 1835 version, and is included in the copies of this revelation printed in the 1836 Evening and Morning Star reprint and in the 1842 Times and Seasons, being confirmed as Scripture in the 1844 D&C where it has remained ever since. Whilst this addition remains a minor edit, the question remains as to why it was inserted so late into the editorial process (four years after the original publication and with no changes in the BoC 1833).
Contextually D&C 1 is part of the editorial process of the Revelation Book (to become the Book of Commandments 1833). It is a late edition into Revelation Book 1 (Section 77) but it is placed at the beginning of the BoC as a suitable introduction to the volume.
By the time the Book of Commandments is published (mid 1833), the revelation has been moved to Section 1 and it remains there through all subsequent versions of the D&C.
