Commentary
5urporting to be from mid 1829, this is the first revelation that evidences a very large amount of redaction and insertion between the original recording and the final canonisation (and future canonised versions). The main redactions / additions are between the 1833 Book of Commandments and the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants.
The main redactions are as follows:
- Insertion of names (Martin Harris, Joseph Smith Jr) to clarify who is being spoken of
- Changes in talking about Joseph Smith Jr to talking to him (for eg, verses 1 -4)
- Excision of major condemnatory text (for eg verse 18)
- Insertion of major condemnatory text )for eg verse 19)
- Insertion of references to ordination / priesthood (verses 6, 11, 17)
The latter is the most interesting, because it fits the theory that Joseph Smith did not teach about the two priesthoods (Aaronic and Melchizedek) or claim to be ordained into them until at least 1835.
