Commentary
This revelation appears to have been given shortly after the July 1830 trial of Joseph Smith (v 17), at which he was acquitted of being “a disorderly person”. The trial includes an allegation (which he admits) that Smith was still practicing money digging / glass looking around the same time as the Book of Mormon was being prepared. Walters produced an article on the two trials which includes extracts of the trial and some historical context. See also the original draft of Joseph Smith’s history that covers the same event. See also the material at the “Joseph Smith Early Documents” site that provides verbatim of all the existing material from the trials.
There is only one redaction, “in the Scriptures” in verse 14 (between Revelation Book 1 and the Book of Commandments) which does not change the sense of the verse in any way.
