Commentary
The significant changes between 1833 and 1835 can be explained by the power struggle in the church leadership between Smith / Cowdrey and Rigdon. In attempt to shore up their authority, Smith and Cowdrey created the stories of the giving of the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods, placing themselves as the unique sources (via the angelic Apostles) of the divine power of the church.
This leads to injections in the text around the new levels of the priesthood (see vv. 41, 49-51, 57, 58 ) and elevation of Smith and Cowdrey to First and Second elder respectively (see vv. 2, 3 10, 45, 66-67).
The Book of Commandments version (1833) dates the revelation to June 1830, not April. The current 2013 version of D&C is circumspect on the exact date. As Marquardt and Walters point out in Inventing Mormonism, there is some doubt about whether the Church was founded on the specific date claimed.
